Cuvée presentation

A single cask (#899) of Caroni distilled in 1997 and bottled in 2022. Understandably considered as one of the most important bottlers of his time, Silvano Samaroli is first and foremost an enthusiast as well as a pioneer. He began his career at the end of the 1960s. First as an importer in Italy, where he distributed Linkwood's single malt as well as a number of blends. His trading activity did not begin, however, until the following decade, with his debut a bottling of Bruichladdich 10 year Old 1965 cask strength. At a time when single malt was far from being as popular as the blends, Samaroli embarked on a meticulous selection and bottling process in contact with distilleries, with a special focus also on Scottish merchants. A champion of whiskies produced in unique casks and bottled to cask strength, he also showcased bottle-aged versions. A visionary in many ways, some of his bottlings, such as Bowmore Bouquet 1966 and 1948 West Indies Rum, are now among the most legendary spirits ever bottled. More than just a figure in the wine trade, Silvano Samaroli is one of the legends of its founding. A limited edition of 132 bottles.

The distillery Caroni

The Caribbean, Trinidad. Distillery closed, site dismantled.

In 1975, under pressure from across the country, the government of Trinidad nationalized a number of companies, including Tate & Lyle, the English giant of sugar production and owner of Caroni Ltd since 1937. The very competitive economic context, however, led to the closure of the island's sugar refineries and the collapse of the molasses production required for the production of rum. In 2001, the government sold its shares in Rum Distillers Ltd (Caroni) to Angostura and closed the distillery in 2002. Caroni Ltd would be definitively liquidated on 31 July 2003. In October 2004, Luca Gargano, the CEO of the Italian spirit distributor Velier and a passionate rum enthusiast and photographer, visited Trinidad to carry out research for a future report. There he found the site abandoned and, within its cellars, a huge stock of barrels, some distilled in 1974. The story of Caroni began in 2005 and the distillery immediately became the subject of lore.
