Donated by La Maison & Velier

Bottle available from November 2024,

Distilled in 1956, in the midst of a revolution, this cuvée selected by the teams at La Maison & Velier pays homage to this golden age of Cuban rum. Its label is illustrated with a piece from Cuban artist Aconcha, called Hoy Como Ayer (Today As Yesterday): a meaningful title for a Cuban cask single of such remarkable age, aged entirely in the tropical climate of Cuba, in ex-rum casks, and bottled brut de fût (at casks strength).
For this wonderful sale, La Maison & Velier offers bottle n°1 as well as a unique print of the work adorning the label, certified by the gallery. This is a 60 x 80 cm print on acrylic glass laminated onto dibond, framed in a wooden shadow box.
Born in Havana in 1946, Aconcha is a self-taught versatile Cuban artist. Raised in a family of craftsmen and designers, she received the teachings of her uncle from a young age, priest of Santeriá, an Afro-Cuban cult derived from the African Yoruba culture, dedicated to the Orishas deities. She was witness to a spiritual initiation ceremony which would significantly influence her artistic work. During the 1960s, a tense political and economical period, Aconcha left to settle in Paris, and eventually Brussels, in order to devote herself to fashion design, music and the visual arts. During the 1990s, she retired to the mountains in Verdon with her partner, interspersing her retirement with numerous visits to Havana. She then began an introspective journey during which painting, drawing and sculpting became her favourite techniques, and the Orishas her muse.
