Donated by Elixir Distillers

Black Tot has donated a Royal Navy rum to the auction, bottled at 54.5% (Navy Strength) in a unique 4.54-litre (one imperial gallon) dame-jeanne, wrapped in traditional wicker cane.
This bottle comes from a lot of rums dating back to the 1950s, blended by Sukhinder Singh from Elixir Distillers to create the historic Black Tot Last Consignment bottling.
Since 1731, the British Royal Navy has officially distributed a daily quota of rum to sailors. In 1740, Admiral Edward Vernon commanded that rum onboard the ships be diluted with water to minimise the effects of alcohol on the crew, a mix that became known as ‘grog’.
The Navy’s love of rum drove the creation of this first blend of rums from different countries around the world, in the early 1800s. Until 1970, the Navy created an endless blend of rums stored in large wooden vats, sourced from different distilleries, such as Caroni and Port Mourant. The taste of the rum evolved year after year, as different batches were added to the blend. This bottle captures the exact moment that this blend was conceived, dating from the mid-1950s.
The last “tot” of rum was served on the 31st July 1970, a date forever known as the Black Tot Day. Today, only a handful of these Royal Navy bottles remain in the world, making it one of the rarest blends of rum in existence.
