Macallan 2002 Exceptional Cask #2340-04 - 2018 Release is part of the Exceptional Single Cask series, an exclusive collection of single malts launched by Macallan, featuring rare and exceptional casks from their collection.
This whisky was distilled on 4th March 2002, a period marked by a vested interest in and attentiveness towards production and ageing processes at Macallan.
This lot came from cask #2340-04, a European oak sherry hogshead, an emblematic Macallan characteristic, from which 283 bottles were produced.
Bottled on 3rd May 2018 after approximately 16 years of ageing, the cask was hand-selected by Macallan’s cellar master, Sarah Burgess.
With an intensely rich profile, this whisky reveals notes of caramel, muscovado sugar, dried fruits and spices such as ginger and nutmeg on the nose, as well as hints of orange chocolate and soft oak. Flavours of the dried fruits and spices dominate the palate, while the finish is long and intense, marked by notes of sherry, bitter orange and rich fruits.
Macallan Time: Space Mastery is a special edition, released to mark the 200th anniversary of the Macallan distillery. This non-age statement whisky is a blend of whiskies aged in 14 different types of casks, paying tribute to the master distillers who have shaped Macallan's reputation.
Building on 200 years of heritage, Macallan Time: Space Mastery demonstrates the distillery's commitment to craftsmanship and innovation.
Inspired by whisky masters of old, and shaped by a wide variety of cask styles allowing for the creation of complex layers, this whisky reveals an incredible aromatic depth, texture and flavour.
This exceptional single malt is presented in a distinct way, in a circular decanter, the shape of which echoes the eternal cycle of life. This decanter is presented in a custom-made case, with a bright-red interior adorned with 200 finely designed points, paying homage to the art of origami.
The distillery Macallan
Macallan is to Scottish single malts what Petrus is to French grand crus - a monument! To this day, no other distillery has sold a single edition at such a high auction price as The Macallan 60 Year Old 1926 Dillon, which fetched £1.2 million in 2018.Macallan owes this renown to the excellence of its production methods and its sherry-cask maturation, as well as the business acumen of its owners who, in the early 20th century, set out to conquer numerous markets, and the aptness of their vision of the distillery and its single malt, which they recognized as being akin to a château and grand cru. This led to the whisky adopting practices from the world of wine, including vintage bottlings for all versions aged 15 years and older, with the help up until the late 1960s of companies such as Campbell, Hope & King and Gordon & MacPhail, who bottled and distributed the malt on The Macallan's behalf. The 1990s saw the appearance of elegant 25 and 30 year olds, including those presented in the Tudor Crystal Decanters range, presaging the change in direction The Macallan would take in the new millennium. In 1999, an outstanding copper-adorned curved crystal decanter was released for a 50 Year Old edition distilled in 1949.
