Cuvée presentation

Established in 1753, Hampden is one of Jamaica’s oldest distilleries. And yet its story has only just begun. Before the estate was bought by the Hussey family in 2009, its rums had never been aged or bottled on site. Up until that point, its spirit was exported, mainly to Europe, and sold to independent bottlers who used it to add flavour to their blended rums, or otherwise to confectioners and perfumers, in an activity that now continues alongside the official bottling of the distillery’s heavy rums, the first aged versions of which were only released in 2018.

Ageing in tropical climates and exploration of the distillery’’s endless aromatic facets creates expressions with rich, intense profiles, such as this single cask #330, specially selected for Whisky Live Paris 2023. An HLCF mark (Hampden Light Continental Flavoured) with 400-600 grams per hectolitre of pure alcohol, this single cask #330 was distilled in 2020 and aged entirely in a sherry butt from the renowned Lustau bodega.

The distillery Hampden

Rum, Jamaica. Distillery operational. Owner: Everglades Farms Ltd.

Independent & family-ownedKnown primarily in the rum, perfume and food industries, Hampden began to move out of the shadows in 2009 when the Jamaican government decided to disinvest from the national Jamaica Sugar Company and auctioned off its assets. The family-owned company Everglades Farms Ltd (owned by the Hussey family) secured the lot and became the owner of this gem which is now considered the alter ego of the Scottish distillery Ardbeg. This link with Scotland is no coincidence. Hampden Estate was bought in 1748 by Robert Stirling, who had left Perthshire (Scotland) in 1742. The Hussey family sells two expressions of its rum, including an Overproof which is particularly well-known in the bar and HORECA segment. But it was in 2017, when family-owned Italian (Velier) and French (LMDW) companies began distributing the first old rums, that Hampden really took off, rising to the ranks of the finest rums currently on the market.
