Tel un phœnix qui renait de ses cendres, Benriach est de ces distilleries qui sont nées plus d'une fois. La première fut en 1898 à l'initiative de John Duff, qui construisit la distillerie, mais qui, deux années plus tard, mit la clef sous la porte en raison de la faillite des Pattison. La deuxième fois, en 1965, sous l'impulsion de la société Glenlivet Distilleries Ltd (futur Chivas Brothers), Benriach fut intégralement reconstruite afin de produire un « malt à blends ». Enfin, le 29 avril 2004, la distillerie passe entre les mains de Billy Walker et de ses partenaires sud-africains et distille à nouveau en septembre de cette même année. Entre temps, seuls quelques négociants proposèrent d'embouteiller le malt de Benriach, dont Gordon & MacPhail. Du côté des propriétaires, une version de 10 ans fut proposée en 1994 par le groupe Seagram. Malgré ses 120 années d'existence, Benriach est une distillerie en devenir sur la scène des whiskies de collection et les connaisseurs ne s'y trompent pas. Les versions single cask millésimées désormais récurrentes sont prises d'assaut dès leurs sorties.
