Portée à bout de bras par les principaux acteurs du marché du single malt de négoce jusqu'au début du 21ème siècle, Port Ellen ne dut son salut qu'à la ferveur grandissante des amateurs de malts tourbés. Victime, comme bon nombre de distilleries de la récession des années 80, Port Ellen ferme ses portes en mai 1983 pour ne plus jamais les rouvrir. C'est en 1998, quinze ans après sa fermeture, que ses propriétaires embouteillent deux versions limitées, l'une célébrant le 25ème anniversaire de la malterie éponyme, et l'autre pour la gamme The Rare Malts Selection. Il faudra attendre le tournant du millénaire pour voir Port Ellen se doter d'un embouteillage spécifique et régulier, de très belle facture, faisant la part belle aux années de production 1978 et 1979.Paradoxalement, les versions les plus jeunes sont les plus difficiles à trouver, dont celles de Signatory Vintage Black Ceramic 10 ans et 13 ans. Si la plupart furent mises en bouteille à 40 ou 43%, elles offrent encore la possibilité de faire l'expérience du profil du distillat sans qu'il soit trop marqué par le chêne. Quoi qu'il en soit, le millésime le plus ancien à ce jour encore disponible auprès d'une poignée de collectionneurs est un Port Ellen distillé en 1967 ou 1968 (la distillerie fut fermée de 1929 au 1er avril 1967), âgé de 12 ans, réalisé pour la visite de la reine H.M The Queen le 9 août 1980 à la distillerie.
